The QVB, set in the heart of the city, is your gateway to Sydney’s vibrant offering. In this new series, Close Quarters, we’re showcasing the best events and must-see experiences happening each month, moments away from our iconic location. As the year starts to wind down, there’s an unmistakable buzz about Sydney. People are excited, lighter even, inching to the end of the year with the anticipation of a sunny summer break ahead. There’s nowhere that atmosphere is more felt than in the beating heart of Sydney’s CBD, the QVB. There are the festive early birds, getting gifts before the holiday season mayhem begins; the gastronomes, stocking up on artisan treats in preparation for impromptu guests; and then there are the out-of-towners, visiting the city for events happening around Sydney.

Art exhibitions promise to draw culture vultures from near and far, concerts will have the city alive with the sound of music and talks are guaranteed to engage the perennially curious. Whatever your hobby, there’s an event in the Harbour City this November to pique your interests. Read on for the rundown.

The event: Art After Hours at the Art Gallery of NSW

The lowdown: For the entire month of November, the Art Gallery of NSW is flinging open its doors till 10pm every Wednesday night. Free and open to all ages, an evening meander through the gallery might be the best way to wind down post-work. Head to the QVB…for a Twisted Ruby cocktail and bar snacks at Esq on Level 2 while live jazz tinkles in the background. The perfect stop between the office and the gallery.

The event: An Evening with Dolly Alderton at Sydney Opera House

The lowdown: From November 5 to 7, award-winning author, screenwriter and podcaster Dolly Alderton will take to Sydney’s most revered stage to discuss her newest book Good Material. Alderton is whip-smart, completely hilarious and will be joined on stage by some of the country’s leading women in media. Head to the QVB…for a fresh blow-dry at Koda Cutters on Level 1 before heading to the event, so you can look your most chic if Dolly spots you after the show and wants to be your best friend (stranger things have happened!).

The event: Carol Performances at the QVB

The lowdown: It’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit. Every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from November 16 to December 22, melodic voices will reverberate through the QVB’s ornate halls for the centre’s spectacular carol performances. A line-up of impressive choirs and musicians will take to the Grand Piano on Level 1 to entertain and delight in the lead up to the festive season. Head to the QVB…for an afternoon of tasty morsels at The Tea Room on Level 3, where you can indulge in a High Tea before revelling in a performance.
