When it comes to holidaying, people tend to fall into one of two camps: the island enthusiasts and the cold climate devotees. The island enthusiasts’ ideal vacation comes in the form of a sun-drenched lounge chair, mojito in one hand, book in the other, crystal waters lapping at the shore before them. The cold climate devotees would rather be rugged up, skiing down powdery mountains or cosied up by a fireplace. It’s hard to deny the allure of the aforementioned island escape — surely the secret to serenity can be found in an overwater villa — but the latest trend in travel sees holidaymakers favouring snow-covered sojourns in place of sunny ones. According to Intrepid Travel, cold weather destinations like Iceland, Finland and Scotland are increasing in popularity, while Condé Nast Traveller named ‘coolcationing’ as one of 2024’s biggest travel trends.

For the adventurous travellers, this might mean hitting the slopes in Japan or Canada – destinations known for their idyllic ski fields and optimal powdery conditions – just as Australian summer begins to roll around. For the cosy holidaymaker (that’s someone who wants to unwind by doing absolutely nothing), this might look more like renting a cabin in the Swiss or Italian alps and curling up by the fire to read the latest Sally Rooney or catch up on Emily in Paris.

Whichever pastime you prefer, a coolcation calls for the right gear. Ugg boots are a must, durable knitwear is non-negotiable and sturdy footwear is essential to withstand wet and snowy conditions. If you’re planning a coolcation, or perhaps we’ve inspired you to book one, read on for the pieces to pack ahead of the trip.

It’s no secret the key to keeping warm is layering up, starting with a lightweight but super cosy knit. Sol Alpaca’s patterned sweater is made from baby alpaca wool, meaning it locks in heat but is thin enough to layer under heavier coats and jackets.

Ugg boots are a winter non-negotiable (and thanks to the return of noughties style, they’re acceptable to wear out in public again too). If you’re travelling, you’ll want a pair that are as cosy as they are lightweight. Ugg’s Deluxe Slippers are akin to moccasins in their slim silhouette, making them perfect for throwing in your carry-on.

Wet and snowy conditions call for footwear made to handle the elements. Leave it to RM Williams to craft a pair of durable rubber-soled boots that can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at them.

Nothing brings you comfort like a hot mug of tea, so you’d be wise to travel with a box of T2’s spicy chai bags — a blend robust enough to bring a little warmth to any climate.

Freezing conditions can wreak havoc on the skin – especially if hitting the slopes is on your agenda – so keep your limbs hydrated with The Body Shop’s nourishing body butter, made with shea butter and rich babassu oil.

The power of a cashmere scarf to keep you toasty should never be underestimated. Hunter Cashmere’s vibrant vermillion version adds a kiss of colour to more monochromatic winter outfits.
