As the balmy days of summer give way to the crisp chill of autumn, it's time to start thinking about transitioning your wardrobe to suit the changing seasons.

Dressing when the weather is not-so-hot, or not-so-cold can be a challenge, but there are certain items – and styling tricks – that you can use to ensure you feel both comfortable and stylish. “I think my number one tip is to lean into layering,” says InStyle Australia’s Fashion Director Rachel Wayman.

“Cardigans, lightweight coats, and non-bulky base layers that will sit smoothly underneath are key.” Accordingly, it might be best to leave your puff sleeves and ruffles at home. “Invest in some hard-working high-quality basics”, advises Wayman. Here are her top picks.

Asagao straight-fit jeans, $650 from Kenzo on Ground Floor

“The perfect pair of straight-leg jeans that you can wear literally everywhere. Style with sandals, boots or heels, depending on the weather and occasion. Trust me, these will be your go-to.”

Softie Quilted Sleeveless Coat, $1,160 from Mulberry on Ground Floor

“This piece is so quintessentially British, but I think it’s a great in-between time coat option to have on hand for when things start to cool down.”

Crewneck Top In A Beige Silk Blend, $990 from Bally on Ground Floor

“Made from a buttery soft blend of cotton and silk, this premium piece has a subtle sheen and smooth, lightweight finish perfect for layering.”

Organically Grown Linen Yarn Dyed Blazer, $399 from Country Road on Ground Floor

“A slouchy, oversized blazer in a lightweight fabric like linen is a great piece you can throw over just about anything when there’s a nip in the air.”

Wrap Cardigan, $299 from Oroton on Ground Floor

Crafted from 100% merino wool, this is a modern take on the classic cardigan that feels really sleek and flattering. Plus it will look fabulous over a crisp white shirt.”
